for ten years out my window i've had to stare at some pretty awful ads. donald trump was the worst. i almost killed myself that month. occasionally there would be some down time when an ad was removed and another wouldn't go up for a week or two. last august however, the ads went down and have never come back up. i assume they stopped doing this because someone decided to enforce the law.

my question is, what about the empty billboard? how can i get THAT removed?

Since Rami pointed it out on a walk, this one has bugged me.

Location: It's visible from the west side highway and is on the side of a Manhattan Mini Storage building. Right now it's an ad for the Love Guru movie. We suspected it covered some vents for the building.

This building sits directly across from the Chelsea Market 10th Ave. entrance. The building takes up the entire block btwn 15th and 16th Streets / btwn 10th and 11th Aves.

The current billboard is for "Belvedere Vodka". Covers several windows on the 15th St. side of the building.

I think this is one of the permits (but its hard to tell since the building has several addresses)::But the permit reads really sketchy

Long time fan, first time caller.

I had a problem finding the exact address, but was able to identify to the lady as being "just north of 936 Broadway". My confirmation code is 1262615 (I think? Am having a hard time looking it up.) This is the same place where that Western Union wrap-around was. (I remember seeing DoB papers demanding its removal.)

Didn't think to take photos - next time! The sign is a vinyl wrap-around, so if someone wants to assist the DoB with prompt removal, it should be fairly easy.

I was also thinking it would be funny to help with consumer awareness of the brand by adding "-$1.45 Billion" underneath. Feel free to nab that idea, anyone. :)

so a friend sent me this info cause he thought the billboard was illegal. 54 Watts has permits for advertising (http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/WorkPermitDataServlet?allisn=0001734783&allisn2=0000604928&allbin=1007123&requestid=2) and accessory signs (http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/WorkPermitDataServlet?allisn=0001811343&allisn2=0001498813&allbin=1007123&requestid=2). can anyone tell me if charles schwabb or some other parent company of chalres schwabb operates out of that building? if not then the sign is about 4 times the size it is permitted for.

my friend writes

Here's a photo of the billboard on the side of the new hotel at 54 Watts St. Also, the permit for its installation that says: INSTALL A NON-ILLUMINATED ADVERTISING WALL SIGN 12'-4 1/2" X 30' ON THE EAST WALL. NO CHANGE TO ZONING, USE, EGRESS OR OCCUPANCY. The actual size is more like 28 x 40, or 3 times the sf allowed by permit and by law based on building frontage. The sign company is in a legal dispute related to installation with the owner of the building below, probably explaining why the content of the sign is so out of date. Also, the complaint from 4/1/08 that is still active and has not been inspected. They also got a permit to install a sign on the other side of the building (over our building) but they backed off (the permit was apparently improperly issued because the total on the two sides would exceed the sf allowed and also the sign would face an arterial highway (holland tunnel entrance) about 200 feet to the west).

This a particularly bad intersection. Photos taken aprox oposite ends of the intersection. I'm sorry I don't have the address yet. Does anyone know a hack/workaround for more accurate google maps addresses? It says 380 Lafayette no matter what direction the camera is pointed.

Looks like the scaffold advertising may be soon be deemed legal and other forms of advertising will be permitted.

Saw these two signs. Looks like there are some permits for them, but they clearly are vinyl and cover windows. There are also violations. This definitely needs to be investigated further.

Work Permits from 2001:
http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/WorkPermitDataServlet?allisn=0000827418&allisn2=0000342319&allbin=1013620&requestid=2
http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/WorkPermitDataServlet?allisn=0000827734&allisn2=0000342320&allbin=1013620&requestid=2

Complaint in 2001 and violation served:
http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/OverviewForComplaintServlet?requestid=2&vlcompdetlkey=0000445611
Another complaint with violation served:
http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/OverviewForComplaintServlet?requestid=2&vlcompdetlkey=0000445111
And one 6 months later with violation served:
http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/OverviewForComplaintServlet?requestid=2&vlcompdetlkey=0000472270

It's been in existence 7 YEARS with no action beyond issuing violations.

I am tagging this one "city hall" so next time we go down there to investigate, we can look it up.

This might be a good one for the blog unless I am missing something?

I must say the character in the video who is defacing the property in the video, are you for real? Now the police, property owners, media companies & etc, have your face and proof that you vandalize private property? Are you for real?

You may hate advertising, but to be a criminal just makes you the lowest of the low.
